When to resize instead of compress
Resizing changes the pixel dimensions (a 4000×3000 photo becomes 1600×1200); compressing keeps dimensions but stores the image more efficiently. Shrinking images for the web usually needs both: a 1600px-wide photo is plenty for a blog post, and dropping from 4000px to 1600px alone removes most of the file size. When enlarging, expect some softness — no tool can invent detail that was never captured.

It keeps width and height proportional (change one and the other follows), so your photo never stretches. Uncheck it only if you deliberately want a squashed or stretched result.
