Why word frequency matters to writers

Repetition you don't notice while writing jumps out instantly in a frequency list. If a content word (anything besides “the”, “and”, “to”) appears far more than its neighbours, you have found a crutch word — vary it or cut it. For SEO, the list shows whether the terms you want to rank for actually dominate the page, or whether synonyms have crept in.

Frequently asked questions

How are words split?

On spaces and punctuation. “don't” counts as one word; hyphenated “well-known” also counts as one. Numbers are included if present.

What are stop words?

Extremely common function words — “the”, “is”, “at”, “of” — that carry grammar rather than meaning. Filtering them surfaces the words that actually describe your content.
