What makes a good URL slug?
A slug is the human-readable part of a URL — the cafe-coffee-at-home in example.com/blog/cafe-coffee-at-home. Good slugs are lowercase, use hyphens between words, drop filler words where possible, and describe the content: search engines display them in results and users read them before clicking. Accented characters (café → cafe) are transliterated so URLs stay pure ASCII and never break in older systems.
Frequently asked questions
Hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators but historically treated underscores as word joiners — coffee-cups reads as two words, coffee_cups as one. Hyphens are the standard for URLs.
How long should a slug be?
Short but descriptive — roughly 3–6 meaningful words. Longer URLs get truncated in search results, and every extra word dilutes the keywords that matter.
